The distribution of isotope in the sciatic nerve was determined at times up to 22 days after injection of (a) [14C]leucine, or (b) [3H]orotic acid, in the spinal cord of the chicken. The results indicate a distal flow of proteins, RNA precursors and perhaps RNA along the nerve axon.  相似文献

The seasonal movements and diurnal activity rhythms of the Grey seals occurring along the Atlantic Coast of Nova Scotia and in the southern part of the Gulf of St Lawrence have been studied over a period of three and a half years. The seasonal movements of the adults can be divided into five periods or phases: (1) prepupping, (2) pupping and mating, (3) postmating, (4) spring concentration and (5) summer dispersal. The diurnal activity rhythm is attuned to the tides; the effects of the hours of daylight appear to be minimal. During the breeding season the cows go to sea as the tide is falling and return when it is rising. Adults of both sexes have a similar rhythm at other times of the year, except in mid-summer when the pattern is reversed.  相似文献

The genome of Arabidopsis thaliana is known to contain numerous open reading frames apparently encoding transposases. In order to test the hypothesis that transposable elements have played a role in segmental duplication in this species, we compared the distribution of transposable elements with that of genomic windows that shared gene families to a greater extent than expected by chance. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that duplication of these segments occurred after the monocot-dicot divergence and probably after the eurosid I–eurosid II divergence. Known transposable elements were found to occur in putatively duplicated segments to a far greater extent than expected on the basis of their genome-wide distribution, suggesting that transposition may have played a role in segmental duplication in this species.  相似文献

Background  

Defensins comprise a large family of cationic antimicrobial peptides that are characterized by the presence of a conserved cysteine-rich defensin motif. Based on the spacing pattern of cysteines, these defensins are broadly divided into five groups, namely plant, invertebrate, α-, β-, and θ-defensins, with the last three groups being mostly found in mammalian species. However, the evolutionary relationships among these five groups of defensins remain controversial.  相似文献

The relationship between weather and wader distributions on non-estuarine coasts is described and used to predict how future wader distributions may respond to climate change. The distributions of eight out of nine species of wader commonly wintering on the non-estuarine coasts of Britain altered between two similar surveys, in 1984/85 and 1997/98, that covered 78% and 38% of Britain's 12 594 km of non-estuarine coastline, respectively. These eight species moved at least in part either eastwards along the winter isotherms or northwards. These changes in distribution broadly coincide with a distributional shift towards the species' respective breeding grounds and are correlated with the local winter weather over the period: increasingly mild extreme temperatures and changes in mean rainfall, mean wind speed and wind-chill. Based on the scenarios for Britain's climate in 2020 and 2080, it is predicted that the distributions of the waders will move away from the west. The non-estuarine coasts of Britain hold particularly high proportions of the international flyway populations of Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula , Sanderling Calidris alba , Purple Sandpiper Calidris maritima and Ruddy Turnstone Arenaria interpres that are all expected to show continuing decline to 2080. Overwintering waders appear to be good indicators of the effects of climate change.  相似文献

Long QT syndrome, either inherited or acquired from drug treatments, can result in ventricular arrhythmia (torsade de pointes) and sudden death. Human ether-a-go-go-related gene (hERG) channel inhibition by drugs is now recognized as a common reason for the acquired form of long QT syndrome. It has been reported that more than 100 known drugs inhibit the activity of the hERG channel. Since 1997, several drugs have been withdrawn from the market due to the long QT syndrome caused by hERG inhibition. Food and Drug Administration regulations now require safety data on hERG channels for investigative new drug (IND) applications. The assessment of compound activity on the hERG channel has now become an important part of the safety evaluation in the process of drug discovery. During the past decade, several in vitro assay methods have been developed and significant resources have been used to characterize hERG channel activities. However, evaluation of compound activities on hERG have not been performed for large compound collections due to technical difficulty, lack of throughput, and/or lack of biological relevance to function. Here we report a modified form of the FluxOR thallium flux assay, capable of measuring hERG activity in a homogeneous 1536-well plate format. To validate the assay, we screened a 7-point dilution series of the LOPAC 1280 library collection and reported rank order potencies of ten common hERG inhibitors. A correlation was also observed for the hERG channel activities of 10 known hERG inhibitors determined in this thallium flux assay and in the patch clamp experiment. Our findings indicate that this thallium flux assay can be used as an alternative method to profile large-volume compound libraries for compound activity on the hERG channel.  相似文献
